After waking up in the middle of a vineyard with sheep yelling at us it was time for wine tasting. The morning was sensational with clear blue skies. We nipped to the city of Hastings, self proclaimed as NZ’s ‘most beautiful city’, a bold claim. There seems to be a chain of ‘Angkor Wat Bakery and Cafe’s’ in NZ who do cheap ADBs (All day breakfast). That was smashed.
We then headed to Mission Estate Winery to do some wine tasting for $5. This was the oldest winery in NZ and was founded by some French priests in 1851. We tried seven different wines, a mix of red and white. We liked the Pinot Gris so much we bought a bottle, we even got a complimentary wine glass. Result!
Next on our list was Moana Park who are a vegetarian and vegan friendly vineyard. They use no preservatives and all their wine is natural. It really is a great place tapping in to the fastest growing market in food and drink in the vegan movement. We tasted five wines and bought a bottle of Syrah 26. We can’t wait to get stuck in to them.
After smashing fish and chips for a late lunch we then headed to our campsite in Waipawa after the cinema. This was a prelude to us heading down to Wellington the day after. A day of great wine, great weather and great food.
