Booking tips

Google Flights

As seen above Google flights are a great way to source cheap flights and in my opinion are one of the best websites along with Skyscanner to use. You can search for direct flights but also if you know your route you can check single flights to certain destinations on the way to save some money. Booking early will save lots of money on flights and these search engines will enable you to get the best price if you are organised.

My website and app of choice is Hostelworld as I believe they have the best range of hostels to book worldwide. The app is great on the move and the interface is simple to use. Using important information such as bank details is secure. If you like a bit of flashpacking then is good for the free booking and cancellation service they offer on hotels.

Word of mouth

One of the best things about travelling is speaking and meeting people in your hostels. You will find that the best local food, travel agents, hostels and sightseeing spots are the ones that have been passed down by people who had experience it that day. I would rather take a recommendation from a fellow backpacker than a website. It would be boring wouldn’t it?

Throughout SE Asia we booked our trips to Halong Bay/Castaway Tour through Hanoi Backpackers, Jungle Trek in Chang Mai through SpicyThai Backpackers and the Tiger Temple tour through Lub d Hostel in Bangkok. Some hostels do provide great tours and its worth looking into them whilst you are there as they could be as good a value as some travel agencies locally as well as more trust worthy. In South America we used local travel agencies and gathered prices for trips like the Salt Flats in Bolivia, Machu Picchu in Peru and Iguazu Falls in Brazil. The advantage of this is comparing prices and getting the cheapest price available. More than not people’s recommendations you are chatting at the hostel or online are a very good source of information.
